Omni Wheel vs Mecanum: Choosing a Humanoid Robot Chassis

Bottom line: for indoor humanoid precision work — ±10 mm charging docking, tight-space lateral movement, stable posture — an omni-wheel chassis with one 3D multi-line LiDAR is the preferred choice: heavier payload (100–500 kg vs 50 kg), slower wear, lower noise. Mecanum suits ultra-narrow, light-load, perfectly flat docking stations. Mecanum is not a "premium omni wheel" — it is a different motion logic.

Common mis-selections

Mis-selection 1: "Mecanum = premium omni." Being able to strafe doesn't make one superior: MW trades sideways sliding for holonomic motion — faster wear, more noise, lower payload. OW synthesizes motion from wheel-speed vectors at 0°: 41% faster, 10× the payload. Want speed and agility → OW; want peak thrust → MW.
Mis-selection 2: "Omni wheels don't last." The opposite: omni rollers take no primary friction, so the wear surface is just an ordinary rubber tire — longer life and quieter than Mecanum. Its weakness is gravel jamming rollers — sweep hard floors and it's solved.
Mis-selection 3: "Holonomic is always better than differential." On wide, fixed routes with point-to-point transport, differential drive is cheaper and tougher. Holonomic ability pays off only in tight-space, high-frequency lateral moves and precision docking — don't pay for idle capability.

Selection guide

Checklist: ① Do you need lateral movement / in-place rotation? ② Payload: under 50 kg or 100 kg+? ③ How flat is the floor? ④ Will a person stand aboard or a battery pack ride on? Humanoids, charging docks, narrow aisles → omni wheel. Ultra-narrow, light-load, perfectly flat production cells → Mecanum. Then match parameters in the full specs table, or use the selector wizard.
